An eternal investment.

by the Settled Team

Dave and Nicole watched years ago as Sacred Settlement Mosaic first took shape. They interacted in gatherings, listened to the vision, and felt motivated to find ways to support the movement.

They also watched as one of their children, a college student living across the country, worked side-by-side with others in serving the poor.

Then the couple watched as Jr, a neighbor at Mosaic, told the world his story: Instead of growing up in a loving family, gang life and the streets were his support network. He found strength not in community or creative work, but in alcohol and drugs.

Life in a Sacred Settlement has helped transform Jr’s life.

“That spoke to me,” Nicole recalled. “It’s so helpful to hear firsthand and understand where someone is coming from.”

Jr’s story helped put a face to Settled’s work—making the ideas of the Full Community model real and tangible.

Then Full Community started to be discussed in their part of town. The West Metro couple soon discovered that the Church of the Open Door is establishing a 12-home Sacred Settlement in their community of Maple Grove, Minnesota.

“Throughout the years, we talked about what we want to support,” Dave said. “There are opportunities right here in our backyard.

”After years of nudging and the Holy Spirit’s guidance, Dave and Nicole found their next commitment was to help people like Jr. find a home at Open Door.

So the couple sponsored two tiny homes.

Because of their generosity, two people will be able to leave behind a life on the street or in the woods — no more bitter winters in a tent with fear of being robbed. This will be a fresh start where they can find community and feel loved by their neighbors. It would be difficult to find a better investment to make.

“All these little points of contact were like we were being called to this,” Dave said.

The work of Sacred Settlements takes all of us, from people like Dave and Nicole, churches like Open Door, neighbors like Jr. and the eternal threads that connect it all together.
